27.3.10

Puddles of...

Are you seeing what I am seeing? The individual who made this mess does not seem too healthy to me.

26.3.10

Ready to be nailed down.

These hardwood flooring are finally ready to be installed. They are currently laid out in the room, getting ready to be nailed down! We have chosen to use a warmer colour for the upper floor of the house while a more chocolate color for the lower. Pictures of those will be up on this blog once our second floor is complete. Thanks for your patience.

25.3.10

Pizza anyone?

What kind of crust would you like for your pizza? We have marble, porcelain, granite, and quartz.

24.3.10

Up on the walls.

Here they are, up on the walls, almost ready to get splashed!

23.3.10

Here they are.

As promised, here are the tiles we have picked up from the store today. However, there has been already a change in plan since we last spoke. These pieces of stone shall be used in our foyer instead. I am such a designer, constantly changing my mind.

22.3.10

Tiles are up.

The walls are slowly covered up in tiles. However, we have to extra patient when working with this type of tile due to its huge size. To avoid any misalignment or the tiles from falling down, we can only put up six pieces per day.

The floor tiles for the bathroom will be arriving home tomorrow. More updates on that soon!

21.3.10

4 feet squared.

The wall tiles which I have chosen for our main bathroom on the second level is a 2' by 2' tile in a light beige tone. I am certain that the end effect on the walls will be quite subtle, yet impressive. To cut tiles of such size, exceptionally pro tools are required which led to the arrival of this monster at our door.

20.3.10

Hi handsome!

Ran into this awfully handsome Chowchow today while picking up a cake from TnT supermarket. He is so fluffy that I wanted to hug him so badly.

On another note, thanks to all my dear friends, family, and of course, Mr. (rich and powerful SOON to be) ROK Choi for a wonderful birthday this year. I love you all!

19.3.10

What's beyond?

It is rather interesting to see bits and pieces of wires from behind our walls. Soon this kind of scene will no longer be visible once we start installing new floorings and baseboards. Hopefully within the next week or two?

18.3.10

Staples gun.

Extra long staples for extra durable work.

17.3.10

Closet doors.

We have found three pairs of these stainless steel finish panels in the As-Is section from Ikea a while back. They have finally found a permanent home in our house. Three of the bedrooms have these panels installed as new closet doors. To maximize the usable space of a closet, each will have two levels of cloth rods, one for winter clothes and one for summer perhaps? I am getting exicited for this to be done so that I can begin un-boxing my clothes in the near future!

16.3.10

Tape.

Time to fill up the gaps with some tape.

15.3.10

Hot water in just 15 secs.

After much discussion, we have finally come to the conclusion of investing in this new machine. No more oversized water tank in the laundry room. Instead, we have replaced the traditional system with an instant water boiler which heats up water instantaneously in just 15 secs once you turn on your hot water faucet. Not only is this system more energy efficient, it also requires only one third of the space of our traditional ones.

14.3.10

Adios.

Goodbye. Best of luck in the dumpyard.

13.3.10

Waste generating creatures.

Ever since we moved into this house in November, we had been constantly generating waste.

12.3.10

New windows!

I took a half day off from work today to watch people install new windows for our house today. After years of drawing spray-in foam insulation in my detail drawings back in school and at work, I finally get to see this product taking action in real life.

11.3.10

Mix it up.

I never knew that the mixer used for the preparation of concrete and cement is not an independent machine, but simply a mixer-head which gets attached to a drill.

10.3.10

Last load of drywalls.

Drywall is such an ingenious product.

9.3.10

Holesaw.

These cut-outs from our drywall ceilings remind me of a physics project which I did back in high school.

8.3.10

Screws.

These look awfully similar to some sort of insects, don't you think?

7.3.10

Suspend them.

Finally! After weeks of searching here and there for the right size, style, price, and colour of light fixture for our dinning room, I have at last found the one that will generate the effect that I aim to achieve. Here they are now, hanging down proudly from our ceiling!

6.3.10

Gus in the mud.

I went out to a dog park today to see my friend's dogs. And here you are, the famous english bulldog, Gus, which Rok Choi have previously taken portrait for! It unbelievable how fast this dog can run regardless of his size and weight.

5.3.10

The tub is in!

I cannot believe how difficult to hunt for a simple bathtub with clean lines and edges. After going to more than five different stores, we have finally spotted the one that is perfect for our bathroom. The most interesting part is that we actually brought it back home from the store with our little Toyota Matrix! It incredible how spacious the interior of this car is.

4.3.10

Rainfall in your tub.

For the main bathroom on the second level, we have chosen a softer showerhead. It almost feels like you are under a gentle rainfall when you shower beneath it. I cannot wait to get myself underneath it after a long day of work in the office.

3.3.10

Old and new.

It is interesting to see how the old system can easily be connected to the new.

2.3.10

Demolished.

For the past few days, the main bathroom on the second floor has started to be demolished. We are now in the process of removing the floor tiles to get ready for the installation of new ones.

1.3.10

Showerhead.

This is the new showerhead which we have recently installed in our master bathroom. It is, I would say, the best showerhead I have used thus far.

28.2.10

Twist it hard.

Plumbers in the past must have been tremendously strong to actually install all the ductwork of a house. Not only are the old iron pipes heavy and inflexible, their connecting parts also present a huge task to fasten.

Bye bye main bath!

Time to finally part with the last remaining bathroom in our house. Some of these pipes will be salvaged for our new sink and toilet, while some will be discarded. And of course, the blue tiles will certainly be a "go".

27.2.10

Light box.

We have started installing pod lights in our basement. As much as this type of light being so widely used, it is actually my first time to see how they get attached to the floor joists prior the installation of drywall ceilings.

26.2.10

New shower...finally!

Today is such an exciting day! The shower in our master bathroom is finally complete. We can finally take a nice long shower without having to ask someone downstairs to turn on the hot water knob for the bathroom upstairs.

25.2.10

What's new in the master bathroom?

Here it is, installed and ready for use in our master bathroom. The cabinet though, is still in the design process. The current one is only temporary for the mounting of the sink.

24.2.10

Rust.

Rusts are often photographers' favourites, but not architects. So which one should I be? Good question.

After three full days of commuting more than two hours on the TTC to get to my training centre, I am happy that it is time to get back to work tomorrow. No more waking up at 6am in the morning! All I can say is, I absolutely HATE the TTC! On a happier note, I am, surprisingly, starting to fall in love with REVIT. The program is just too powerful in what it can perform for you in comparison to other programs. Life would have been one hundred times easier if I knew about this program during my last term of school. Unfortunately, it's too late now.

23.2.10

Cross-section.

The top portion of our old metal handrail will be removed, but the bottom part of it will be used as the base of our new wooden one.

22.2.10

Last one.

I absolutely love these old door knobs of our room doors; full of texture and unique character. This is the last one in our house that has not been taken down yet. I am actually considering of using them as clothes hangers in my room or our foyer.

21.2.10

Love in the winter.

I went out with ROK Choi today to do Ann and Mike's engagement shoot for the winter theme. Shooting in the cold is definitely a lot more difficult than in the fall or summer. My fingers were so frozen that I could barely press on my camera. Nonetheless, it was a great session!

On a side note, I would like to congratulate my parents for selling their condo!

20.2.10

The hood is up!

After months of cooking without any means of exhaust, our new hood is finally up and running in the kitchen!

19.2.10

Material palette.

These are a few of the finishes that I am considering for our wall of cabinets in the kitchen/dinning room. Still looking for the "perfect" one though.

18.2.10

Old wooden frames.

Good news, our new windows will begin to get installed in two weeks! No more streams of cold air leaking in through our sixty years old wooden frames.

17.2.10

How fresh is your wall?

I never noticed the date and time printed on any pieces of drywall. Now I know how to tell whether your wall is fresh or not!

16.2.10

Storage.

The current condition of our living room...storage. But at least drywalls are up and we are no longer seeing the exposed floor joists of the second floor with dust falling down once in a while on your head.

15.2.10

Basic Math.

How was life without a calculator? How did I go through elementary school without a calculator? I almost forgot how that feels like. People always have the perception that architects must be people who are exceptional in math, unfortunately, I must inform you that they are all wrong.

14.2.10

新年快樂!

Happy Chinese New Year everyone! Welcome to my year, the year of the TIGER!

13.2.10

Time to wrap up!

Tonight is the last night of the year of the Ox! I believe everyone must have been quite busy attending family dinners these few nights to celebrate the arrival of the new year. Now, let's wrap things up and get ready for some red pocket actions!

12.2.10

The details.

These are one of the last old door frames that remain inside our house. Within the next week, none will remain and they will forever be history.

11.2.10

10.2.10

Beautiful Curves.

These old railings will be taken down very shortly. You will be remembered.

9.2.10

Under attack!

Looking at these new electrical wires silently making their way through the walls, it feels like our house is getting attacked by the tentacles of some unidentified creatures!

8.2.10

Behind those switches.

These metal boxes nestled within our walls used to be the old home to our knob-and-tube switches.

7.2.10

Sharp Edges.

How do you ensure that wall corners are 90 degrees? Apparently, strips of L-shaped angles are fastened in place to make corners absolutely perpendicular to each other.
